South of Tierra del Fuego
I neglected to mention that Ushuaia,
Argentina, is home of the world's
southernmost brewery.
And the label was entirely in English.
Early morning at Cape Horn.

At the left is the Cape Horn lighthouse. At the right is the the Cape Horn Memorial, which honours sailors lost
in these waters. It is the image of an albatross, but about half of it was torn down by a storm. You may
be able to see the only landing spot on the island (^)--supplies are taken up the cliff in an elevator.
The monument reads:
I, the albatross that awaits you at the end of the world.
I, the forgotten soul of the sailors lost that crossed Cape Horn from all the seas of the world.
But die they did not in the fierce waves, for today towards eternity in my wings they soar in the last crevice of the Antarctic winds.

From Ushuaia we sailed back out of the Beagle Channel for Cape Horn. There is a lighthouse at Cape Horn, manned by a family of four. The Chilean government supplies a tutor who visits regularly.
This is where the Atlantic and Pacific meet, and as you go south you come to the junction of the Atlantic, Pacific and Southern Oceans.
At one time no one knew that you could sail around the cape--they thought South America extended indefinitely south and the only way to the Pacific was through the Straight of Magellan. When some Dutch captains rounded the cape and reported to the Dutch East India Company, they were thrown in jail to keep their discovery secret! But then Drake discovered the passage and the secret was out.

What better place to fly a kite than on a ship?
